Rising Sun is one of CMON's big Kickstarter-special boardgames. Featuring large numbers of exquisitely detailed plastic miniatures and generally excellent production values, when released on Kickstarter this game raised over $4million. While I missed out on the Kickstarter itself, and all the exclusives that came with it, the retail-version is hardly short on goodies!
The game itself is a game of alliance-building and negotiation set in a highly mythologised version of Feudal Japan. Stylised samurai, massive monsters and mystical Kami abound, but the core gameplay is heavily dependent on negotiation between the players.
Contained within the core-box are 5 different clans, each with unique abilities in the game, and all with very distinct styles. I started off by painting the Turtle Clan first (as they are my least favourite models in the box), whose special ability is that their fortresses are built on the back of giant turtles, so can move around the map and count towards the clan's military force in a province.
Colour-Theory
While my normal approach is to go as far away from an accepted "studio" scheme as possible, with these models I had to make a concession to the fact that they are board-game pieces, and as such need to be easily recognisable as the clan in question. I therefore decided to base each clan's colour scheme around the clan's primary colour, and then use a colour scheme designer (I used paletton.com) to work out what splash colours I wanted to use.

I used a slight variation of this for the Daimyo to make him stand out a bit more |
Onto the Models
Each clan comes with 10 models:
- 6 Bushi (in 2 different sculpts) - the clan's basic soldiers;
- 3 Shinto - holy warriors that can be sent to worship the Kami; and
- 1 Daimyo - the clan's leader.

Up next, we'll have the Koi Clan. Until then, thanks for looking!
