Hello and welcome to a look at the third and (so far) last of my Dystopian Wars fleets, the Kingdom of Denmark (KoD).
The Kingdom of Denmark
Another of Dystopian Wars' alliance nations, the KoD is a close ally of the Prussian Empire. Stylistically they share a lot of features with their allies, not least the design of their turrets. I personally love the really sleek, tightly designed look of their vessels. In terms of their gameplay, they are (surprise surprise) a fast, close range fleet. Best described as gunnery-focused Prussians but turned up to 11. Aside from shield generators on their large ships, they have no defences to speak of, and rely on speed, manoeuvrability and positioning to make the most of their power. However when they do get in range to shoot their firepower is terrifying. All their ships are equipped with powerful mines, and once a turn they are able to use a magnetic pulse to push those mines towards enemy vessels.
I've honestly never been able to make them work so far - the fleet that comes in the naval starter set (all I have painted so far) is quite one-dimensional, and I think things may be easier with the addition of the airships and carrier from the support box. Fortunately that is sitting primed and ready to paint!
Painting
If you have read my post about my Prussian fleet, you will know that I attempted to paint that fleet blue-grey initially and failed. This was also my plan here, and from the photo above you can see how that went... Nevertheless I am really happy with the results here: it fits the very modern, crisp look that I think the KoD suits very nicely.
You will also notice the single red corvette... This was another test model that I didn't like much, but that I haven't got around to stripping yet. Depending on whether the Dettol ever comes out again, I may leave it like that for now, and come up with some justification for it in the fleet's background!
Anyway, onto the fleet:
The Ragnarok Pocket Battleship is one of my favourite models in Dystopian Wars. It is just perfectly compact: there is no space wasted around the three huge turrets that it mounts. |
I am aware of the futility of painting camo on a ship with a giant red Danish flag on the side, but eh, Sturginium... |
Skagerrak Gunships are the ultimate in glass cannons. When upgraded with a second turret their firepower is ridiculous. |
You pay for this power though - a fully upgraded squadron is expensive, so keeping one or two with the standard calcification generator is good (in 2.0 at least) at supporting Danish boarding forces. |
And here is some of that boarding potential - Sigurd Cruisers. With 5 AP each and terror tactics, combined with powerful gunnery, they are a good aggressive unit. |
It of course goes without saying that they are phenomenally fragile. |
Korsor Corvettes are unlike most nations' corvettes. With reasonable gunnery and below average boarding, their strength is in the sheer number of mines a full squadron can drop. |
Thanks for reading!
